November 17, 2021: Developing Transformation and Regeneration Systems in Non-model Plant Systems: Basics and Case Studies

  •  Date and time: November 17, 2021; 2-3 pm EST
  •  Speakers: Shengchen Shan, Michael Pisias, Pam Soltis and Doug Soltis
  •  Description: with the rapid application of CRISPR in plant sciences, establishing a genome editing system in non-model plant species holds enormous potential. However, the development of plant transformation and regeneration systems is the main bottleneck of applying CRISPR in any plant, especially non-model species. In this webinar, we will cover the basic concepts and procedures of plant transformation and regeneration. In addition, case studies involving two non-model plant systems, Tragopogon (Asteraceae) and non-domesticated Brassica (Brassicaceae), will be discussed. Through this webinar, we hope to facilitate the development of transformation and regeneration systems in other non-model plant systems and encourage broad CRISPR applications within our community. This webinar is supported by an NSF EDGE grant.

  •  Date and time: May 4, 2021; 12-1 pm EDT
  • Description: Developing an efficient genome editing system in plants that are not genetic models is challenging, but holds enormous potential in plant science. In this webinar, we will discuss the potential applications of CRISPR in diverse non-model plant systems, the mechanism of CRISPR-mediated genome editing, and the considerations in adapting CRISPR/Cas9 in non-model systems. Through this webinar, we hope to encourage a burst of CRISPR applications within our community in the near future.
